LCD TV Backlight Basics: Direct-lit, Edge-lit, Mini LED, Dynamic Dimming PWM, and Local Dimming Backlighting?

The backlight module of an LCD TV is a crucial component of the LCD screen, directly affecting the brightness and overall display quality. This article will explain in detail several key backlight technologies: direct-lit backlighting, edge-lit backlighting, mini LED backlighting, dynamic dimming PWM, and local dimming backlighting.

I. Direct-lit and Edge-lit Backlighting

Direct-lit Backlighting:

Principle: An LED backlight panel is placed under the liquid crystal layer, with LEDs evenly distributed on the back of the liquid crystal layer.

Features: The backlight panel can be divided into zones, with each zone's brightness controlled independently, thereby improving contrast, achieving HDR (High Dynamic Range) display, and obtaining a better display effect. Disadvantages: The panel is thicker, and the number of zones is limited.

Edge-lit Backlighting:

Principle: A traditional LED backlight module is encapsulated on the side of the LCD panel. Light refracted by a light guide plate passes through the liquid crystal panel layer for display.

Features: Edge-lit backlighting typically uses dozens of LED chips, which may result in uneven light distribution and prevent local dimming. The advantage is a thinner panel.

II. Mini LED Backlighting

Mini LED:
Definition: Mini LED, also known as sub-millimeter light-emitting diode, has a chip size between 50-200μm, falling between traditional small-pitch LEDs and Micro LEDs.

Applications: Mini LED direct-view displays are more commonly used in large-screen displays for events, while Mini LED TVs are essentially LCD TVs with Mini LED backlighting.

Features: Mini LED backlighting shrinks traditional LED chips, significantly increasing the number of backlight chips and allowing for thousands or tens of thousands of local dimming zones. Combined with local dimming technology, it can achieve a contrast ratio exceeding 1,000,000:1 and higher resolution, resulting in excellent image display.

III. Dynamic Dimming (PWM)

Dynamic Dimming:
Principle: Adjusts the brightness of the backlight LEDs in real time according to the content of the displayed image. When displaying a darker image, appropriately reduce the brightness of the LEDs, or even turn off all corresponding backlight LEDs when displaying a completely black image.

Technology: Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technology, which adjusts the brightness of the LEDs by changing the duty cycle of the LED's forward operating current.

Dynamic Dimming Types:
Global Dimming: Adjusts the overall brightness of the LED backlight, suitable for scenarios with limited dynamic range, such as laptops. The disadvantage is limited synchronous contrast.
1D Local Dimming: More commonly used in edge-lit backlight panels, where LED groups can be independently controlled to form vertical or horizontal dimming zones, improving contrast.
2D Local Dimming:Divides the backlight into matrix-like zones, adjusting the backlight value according to the image content of each zone, producing the best image quality and extremely high contrast.

IV. Backlight Local Dimming
Backlight Local Dimming:
Definition:** Backlight local dimming refers to dividing the backlight module into multiple independently controllable areas, each with its own brightness adjustment based on the image content.

Significance: Local dimming backlighting significantly improves contrast and dynamic range, making dark areas darker, bright areas brighter, and details richer.

Types: Based on the dimension of the backlight partitions, they can be divided into 1D local dimming (horizontal or vertical partitioning) and 2D local dimming (matrix partitioning). 2D local dimming typically achieves higher contrast and better image quality.

In summary, direct-lit backlighting, edge-lit backlighting, mini LED backlighting, dynamic dimming PWM, and local dimming backlighting technology are all important components of LCD TV backlight modules. Each has its own characteristics and advantages; through proper combination and application, they can significantly improve the picture quality and display effect of LCD TVs.
