What are the classifications of LED backlights?
Edge-lit backlights place linear or point light sources on the side of the light guide plate, and can be made in a double-sided or triple-sided configuration depending on the actual needs. While this design allows for very thin designs, its light utilization efficiency is lower, decreasing as the thickness decreases.
Bottom-lit backlights are flat surface light sources. These can be continuous and uniform surface light sources, such as EL or flat panel fluorescent lamps, or point light sources, such as LED dot matrix or incandescent lamps. Bottom-lit backlights offer advantages such as high brightness and good uniformity, but their disadvantages include greater thickness and significant heat generation.
Advantages of LED Backlights
LED backlights are more energy-efficient than CCFL backlights, achieving energy savings of over 40% for the same specifications, and over 60% for high-quality products. With the maturation of LED backlight technology, future displays will offer even better energy efficiency.
LED backlights do not contain harmful mercury, contributing to environmental protection. With a global annual production of approximately 220 million displays, the widespread adoption of LED backlights will have a positive impact on the Earth's environment.
LED backlight modules emit purer white light, resulting in a wider color gamut and better color performance for the display.
LED backlights have a longer lifespan and a longer brightness decay period. With technological advancements, there is still room for improvement in LED backlight lifespan.
LED backlight systems are thinner and lighter than traditional CCFLs, aligning with modern consumers' pursuit of slim designs. "Thinness" is a key selling point for many LED-backlit displays.
Disadvantages of LED Backlights
LED backlights generally have lower brightness, typically below 250 cd/m², or even lower. Insufficient brightness affects image quality and usability, especially in high-brightness applications.
The uniformity of LED backlights is difficult to control; each LED must maintain consistent luminous characteristics. LEDs with inconsistent lifespans severely impact light uniformity. Most products on the market exhibit only average uniformity.
Bottom-lit LED backlights use more LEDs, leading to increased power consumption and temperature. This necessitates additional cooling systems and sensors to address heat dissipation, resulting in greater thickness.
