What are the acceptance criteria for outdoor LED displays?

The acceptance of outdoor LED displays requires a comprehensive assessment from multiple dimensions such as display performance, structural process, environmental adaptability, operational stability, energy efficiency and environmental protection. The specific acceptance criteria are as follows:

Display performance

The color reproduction capability of the display needs to highly replicate the colors of the playback source to ensure the image is realistic and natural. If there is a color deviation (such as red tint or blue tint), it may be caused by insufficient precision of the driver chip or defects in the color calibration algorithm. It is necessary to detect the color gamut coverage and ΔE value (color difference value, should be ≤ 3) using a professional colorimeter.

Figure: Color Reproduction Test Scenario

There should be no obvious color blocks between the color blocks and the color difference module (color transition should be at the module level). Otherwise, it may be caused by poor control system performance, insufficient gray level (recommend ≥ 14bit) or too low scanning frequency (recommend ≥ 1920Hz). Visual inspection should be conducted under a pure color screen, and color temperature consistency should be measured using an optical instrument.

The red, green and blue primary color ratios for the white balance effect should be strictly controlled at 1:4.6:0.16 to display pure white. If there is color deviation (such as pinkish white or bluish white), the control system parameters need to be adjusted or the chip should be replaced (it is recommended to use high color rendering index LEDs with CRI ≥ 80).

The surface flatness error should be ≤ ±1mm. To avoid visible angle dead zones caused by local protrusions or depressions. Excessive flatness usually results from insufficient processing accuracy of the box or deformation of the installation bracket. It needs to be detected with a laser level meter.

Mosaic and Dead Point

Mosaic: Constantly lit/constant black small square blocks (modular dielectric failure), caused by poor contact of the connectors or malfunction of the driver IC. It is necessary to check the connectors between the modules and the solder joints on the PCB board.

Dead point: A single permanently lit or permanently blackened point, caused by a faulty or damaged tube core. The number of dead points per square meter should be counted (it should be ≤ 2).

Brightness: The outdoor screen should be ≥ 1600cd/m2 (≥ 900cd/m2 for indoor use), which is determined by the light output of the LED chips. Low brightness will result in poor visibility in sunlight, and an illuminance meter should be used for testing.

Viewing angle: The horizontal/vertical angle should be ≥ 140°, which is determined by the chip packaging method (such as SMD surface mount packaging is superior to DIP direct insertion). Insufficient angle will limit the coverage area of the audience.

Waterproof and sun-resistant

Waterproof rating: Must reach IP65 (dust and water resistance), verified through a rain test (simulating a heavy rain environment).

Anti-UV: The shell material must contain UV stabilizers to prevent yellowing and brittleness caused by long-term exposure to sunlight. A material weather resistance test report must be provided.

Operating stability

For long-term trouble-free operation, a continuous power-on test of 72 hours is required. Record the number of times of system crashes, screen flickering, etc. (should be ≤ 1 time). Most of the faults are caused by poor power stability or insufficient heat dissipation design.

The anti-interference capability should ensure no screen jitter or data loss even in an electromagnetic interference environment (such as when there is a radio transmitter tower nearby). It must pass the EMC test (in compliance with the GB/T 17626 standard).

Energy efficiency and environmental protection

The maximum power consumption should be ≤ 800W/m2 (taking the P10 full-color screen as an example). The low-power design can reduce operating costs. An energy efficiency test report (in compliance with GB 32028 standard) must be provided.

The outer shell should be made of flame-retardant material (UL94 V-0 grade). The content of harmful substances such as lead and mercury should comply with the RoHS standards. A material composition test report needs to be provided.

Installation and Maintenance

The modular design of the box should support quick disassembly and assembly (such as magnetic or snap-fit connections), and the weight of each module should be ≤ 8kg, making it convenient for high-altitude operations.

For the replacement of vulnerable components such as power supplies and receiving cards, a drawer-type design should be adopted. The replacement time should be no more than 5 minutes per unit. On-site simulation of faults and replacement tests are required.

Document review: Check product qualification certificates, 3C certification, IP waterproof certification, etc.

Appearance inspection: Visual inspection of flatness, color blocks, dead points, etc.

Performance testing: Use professional instruments to test parameters such as brightness, color temperature, power consumption, etc.

Environmental testing: Simulate rain exposure, high temperature (≥50℃) and other environments to verify reliability.

Long-term operation: Recheck performance after continuous operation for 72 hours.

By strictly following the above standards, outdoor LED display screens can ensure that they meet the expected requirements in terms of information dissemination effect, service life and safety.
