Besides improvements in backlight technology, the display field has another entirely new self-emissive technology-OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). It requires no backlight and boasts many unique advantages. So, what exactly are OLED and its advanced version, AMOLED? What are their advantages and developmental bottlenecks? Let's find out.

Simply changing backlight technology might not be enough to revolutionize LCDs, so let's look at the development of other LCD technologies.

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is different from traditional LCD displays. It doesn't require a backlight, using a very thin coating of organic materials and a glass substrate. When current flows through it, these organic materials emit light. Furthermore, OLED displays can be made lighter and thinner, have wider viewing angles, and significantly save energy. However, its lifespan and price are currently bottlenecks limiting its development in LCD applications.

OLED is another noteworthy panel application technology, and its implementation of small-sized panels is relatively recent. According to customer plans, more models will be launched in 2008-2009, but they will still be mainly sub-panels. Even if the number of models and shipments increase significantly compared to now, the market share will not exceed 10%. OLED was originally valued by the industry because of its thinness and superior contrast, viewing angle, and power saving compared to TFT-LCD. It was believed that OLED would replace TFT-LCD, and many companies invested in its research and development several years ago. However, on the one hand, OLED technology itself has encountered bottlenecks, and the lifespan issue needs to be overcome; on the other hand, TFT-LCD technology continues to improve and can now also provide excellent contrast and viewing angle. As a result, the demand for OLED has not been able to increase significantly. Moreover, the market is not large and supply exceeds demand, which limits price competition. The companies that invested in OLED have also faced the fate of dissolution and downsizing. Wintek, a Taiwanese company, previously invested in and established Wintek Yuan Semiconductor to focus on OLED research and development. However, seeing that OLED could not compete with TFT-LCD, especially due to significant cost differences-TFT-LCD could easily achieve a 170-degree viewing angle, 500:1 contrast ratio, increased brightness, and thinner designs, although its response time was slightly slower, it remained within acceptable limits for the human eye-Wintek Yuan Semiconductor was dissolved. Only a few R&D personnel returned to Wintek to work on materials development. There is still potential for OLED if its lifespan and price improve significantly in the future; currently, it is limited to products with unique features and a focus on innovation; the timeline for large-scale production is yet to be seen.

AMOLED (Active Matrix/Organic Light Emitting Diode) panels are considered the next-generation display technology, and companies including Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDI, and LG Philips are all paying close attention to this new display technology. Currently, besides Samsung Electronics and LG Philips focusing on developing large-size AMOLED products, Samsung SDI and AU Optronics are focusing on small and medium-sized AMOLEDs. Judging from the current performance of finished products, if the cost of AMOLED can be effectively controlled, traditional LCD panel technology will face a significant challenge.
