COB displays can easily achieve pixel pitches below 1.0mm. Smaller pixel pitch means more pixels per unit area, resulting in a clearer image, smoother color transitions, and more delicate image details, meeting the demands of high-definition display scenarios.
SMD packaging, limited by its manufacturing process, struggles to achieve smaller pixel pitches, making it relatively inferior in displaying fine images.
Stronger Protection
COB packaging directly encapsulates the light-emitting components on the PCB board, completely sealing them off. During transportation, installation, and disassembly, they will not fall off due to vibration or excessive force, providing excellent impact resistance. Their load-bearing capacity is 5 times that of SMD packaged small-pitch LEDs.
SMD-packaged components are exposed, making them more susceptible to damage from impacts during the aforementioned processes, affecting the normal operation and lifespan of the display.
The slim and lightweight cabinet facilitates handling. COB displays feature ultra-thin cabinets and are lighter, making them easier to install, disassemble, and transport, saving labor and time costs, especially suitable for locations with strict space and installation requirements.
SMD displays are relatively thicker and heavier, requiring more manpower for these operations and demanding stricter requirements for installation space and conditions.
Better outdoor environmental adaptability. COB displays can withstand various harsh outdoor environments such as moisture, cold, dampness, freezing, thunderstorms, oxidation, and extreme heat, maintaining normal display without being affected by these conditions, demonstrating high stability and reliability.
SMD displays may experience varying degrees of impact on performance and lifespan when exposed to these complex outdoor environments. For example, humid environments may cause short circuits, and high temperatures may accelerate component aging.
Excellent heat dissipation. COB displays dissipate heat directly through the PCB board, with low thermal resistance, preventing heat accumulation and effectively reducing the display's operating temperature, thus ensuring product lifespan.
SMD packaging has a relatively long heat dissipation path, making it easy for heat to accumulate inside the device, leading to increased temperature. Prolonged high-temperature operation can affect device performance and lifespan.
Better Light Sensitivity: COB displays use surface light sources, effectively suppressing moiré patterns. They do not cause eye strain when viewed at close range, making them suitable for scenarios requiring prolonged close-range viewing, such as conference rooms and monitoring rooms.

Disadvantages of Mini COB Displays: High Transition Costs: Due to the differences in packaging methods between COB and SMD, LED display companies need to invest heavily in equipment upgrades, technology research and development, and personnel training when transitioning from SMD to COB. This high transition cost has resulted in relatively few COB display manufacturers.
Higher Price: For the same model, COB displays are 10-20% more expensive than SMD packaged LED displays. This is mainly because the COB packaging process is relatively complex, resulting in higher production costs and making it less competitive in the market.
Initial Challenges Exist in Ink Color Consistency
Some believe that the ink color consistency of COB displays is insufficient, affecting the overall aesthetics of the product. In reality, this issue exists in LED displays with a pixel pitch of less than 1.0mm, regardless of the packaging method. While this problem has been well controlled, it may still affect the user's first impression of the product in certain situations.
