What is COB?
COB technology is an emerging LED packaging technology. Unlike traditional SMD surface-mount packaging, it integrates the light-emitting chips onto a PCB board, rather than soldering them individually. COB effectively improves the color and light emission of LED displays, reduces risk, and lowers costs.
LEDs have two packaging forms: discrete and integrated. Discrete LED devices are a traditional packaging method, widely used in various related fields. After more than forty years of development, a series of mainstream product forms have emerged. Chip-integrated modules are currently a customized packaging method, mainly designed and manufactured for specific application products, and have not yet become a mainstream product form.
Traditional LED approaches, due to the lack of readily available suitable core light source components, are not only labor-intensive and time-consuming but also costly.
In fact, we can combine "discrete LED light source devices → MCPCB light source module" into one, directly mounting the semiconductor chips onto an MCPCB to create a COB light source module. The electrical connection between the chip and the substrate is achieved using wire bonding, and resin is used for coverage to ensure reliability. This not only saves labor and time but also reduces device packaging costs. [1] Compared with discrete LED devices, COB light source modules can save on the cost of primary LED packaging, light engine module manufacturing, and secondary light distribution in applications, and actual calculations show that they can reduce the cost of light sources by about 30%. In terms of performance, through reasonable design and microlens molding, COB light source modules can effectively avoid the drawbacks of discrete light source device combinations, such as spot light and glare; and by adding appropriate red chip combinations, the color rendering of the light source can be effectively improved without significantly reducing the efficiency and lifespan of the light source. In terms of application, COB light source modules can make installation and production simpler and more convenient, effectively reducing application costs; in terms of production, existing process technologies and equipment can fully support the large-scale manufacturing of COB light source modules with high yield rates.
