Classification Methods of LED Displays

LED displays have various classification methods, and the common classifications are as follows:

Classification by Usage Environment

Indoor Screens: With an area ranging from less than 1 square meter to more than ten square meters, used indoors. They feature moderate brightness, a large viewing angle, a short color mixing distance, light weight and high density, suitable for close viewing.

Outdoor Screens: With an area ranging from several square meters to dozens or even hundreds of square meters, and a relatively sparse dot density (mostly 2500–10000 dots per square meter), the luminous brightness is 5500–8500 cd/square meter (the brightness requirement varies with different orientations). They can be used under direct sunlight, with a viewing distance of more than tens of meters, and the screen body has good wind, rain and lightning protection capabilities.

Semi-Outdoor Screens: Between outdoor and indoor screens, with high luminous brightness, they can be used outdoors without direct sunlight. The screen body has a certain seal and is generally installed under the eave or in the window.

Classification by Color

Monochrome: The display has only one color of luminescent material, mostly single red, and yellow-green can also be used in some special occasions (e.g., funeral parlors).

Dual-Color: Composed of red and green LED lamps, a dual-color display with 256-level grayscale can display 65,536 colors (a dual-color screen can display 3 colors: red, green and yellow).

Full-Color: Composed of red, green and blue LED lamps, it can display white balance and 16,777,216 colors.

Classification by Control or Usage Method

Synchronous Mode: The working mode of the LED display is basically the same as that of a computer monitor, which real-timely maps the computer image on the monitor point by point at an update rate of at least 30 frames per second, and is usually used to display videos and images in real time.

Asynchronous Mode: The LED screen has the ability of storage and automatic playback. The text and non-grayscale pictures edited on the PC are transmitted to the LED screen through the serial port or other network interfaces, and then the LED screen plays them offline automatically. Generally, it has no multi-grayscale display capability, is mainly used to display text information, and can realize multi-screen networking.

Classification by Display Performance

Video Displays: Generally full-color displays.

Text Displays: Generally single-primary color displays.

Graphic Displays: Generally dual-color displays.

Market Displays: Generally nixie tube or single-primary color displays.

Classification by Display Device

LED Nixie Displays: The display device is a 7-segment nixie tube, suitable for making clock screens, interest rate screens and other electronic displays for displaying numbers.

LED Dot Matrix Graphic Displays: The display device is a dot matrix display module composed of many evenly arranged light-emitting diodes, suitable for playing text and image information.

LED Video Displays: The display device is composed of many light-emitting diodes, which can display various video files such as videos and animations.

Conventional LED Displays: The display is fixed and installed in one position with a steel structure. The main common ones include large outdoor single-column LED advertising screens, and single and dual-color LED displays installed on the walls of stations to play train schedule information.

Rental LED Displays: In the design, the R&D department has considered that the screen is often used for installation and disassembly, so the left and right cabinets are connected with quick locks with positioning function, with accurate positioning and light overall weight, suitable for frequent movement and construction.
